nonfiction: beth hankes/joe smith

PULP is pleased to announce a 2 person show, NONFICTION, with recent work by artists Beth Hankes & Joe Smith.

Truth has become slippery. Perhaps it always has been. Through art we attempt get to the bottom of what is. Both artists, through their art, are digging deep and have created powerful bodies of work.

“Objects can carry many versions of fact. In our work, we both take objects, marks, and gestures, and use them to suggest a new truth, a new story. The sum of the parts is more significant than each item, yet each item is necessary and has its own resonance. A sturdy ladder made of delicate glass; shoe prints from a crowd of one. The emotional truths that we so often try to avoid are expressed through our artistic actions. Through those actions, the objects speak a language that is different from their native tongue.”

Beth Hankes is a photographer and installation artist. Her work has been exhibited in New England and abroad. She graduated Mt. Holyoke

College in 2008 with an art history/studio art degree and has a masters in art history from Harvard Extension School.

Joe Smith has been a working sculptor for over 30 years, He has exhibited in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and internationally, with reviews in NYTimes, Chicago Tribune, Art Forum, and Art in America. Beth & Joe both live in Burlington, Vt. In 2018 Smith retired from Mt.Holyoke College Dept. of Art.
