pulp presents a two person show of paintings by easthampton, ma couple roger & christie patrick. christy’s paintings evoke an earlier innocence and nostalgia. most of the paintings can be seen from the perspective of a passenger driving along the city streets - underpasses, mundane intersections and signs. and in this, perhaps an artist in her youth discovering the beauty of composition and color. of concrete, brick, grey skies and an oldsmobile 97. there is a sense of deja vu and quiet that the paintings inhabit. we all have been there, and bring our own travels and thoughts to this work.
as seen from above, roger’s most recent work brings to mind october 3rd, 1995 when police were in pursuit of o.j. simpsons white bronco through southern california. and connect to the current black lives matter movement and iphone capture of tragic and racist events in our country. . the formalism and beauty of his paintings draw you in to a multitude of scenes involving the police, playgrounds, traffic jams and skids. we watch as five police cars converge at a city corner, we watch from afar. at the dark figures meeting on the basketball court, and the sweep of a rural meadow. in these moving paintings, the artist has documented the distance from these actions. we are separate.
the patricks met in undergraduate school at lyme academy college of fine arts. the couple then traveled to minneapolis where roger received an mfa in painting and drawing at the university of minnesota. eventually they moved east, and christy received an mfa from umass amherst. they have both exhibited their work extensively in new england and beyond.
